Leaving Jamaican Plain in 1936, they moved to Winthrop, Massachusetts. Here, she published her first poem in the Boston Herald children's section. Furthermore, she wrote more and at 11, she maintained a journal. Just when she published her first poem, her father died due to the amputation of the foot through an increase in diabetes.
